Cells

Ms. Hurt’s fifth-grade science class participated in a hands-on learning experience comparing and contrasting the parts of plant and animal cells. To deepen their understanding, Ms. Hurt organized the classroom into interactive learning stations that students rotated through.

● Station 1 (Microscope Station): Students used microscopes to observe plant and animal cells up close and sketched what they saw.

● Station 2 (Reading Station): Students read an informational passage about plant and animal cells and answered comprehension questions.

● Station 3 (Organelle Station): Students differentiated the functions of cell organelles, identifying whether they belonged to plant cells, animal cells, or both.

Students were engaged. This lesson directly supports the Georgia Standards of Excellence for 5th Grade Science (S5L3), which requires students to compare and contrast the parts of plant and animal cells and explain their functions. It also helps prepare students for success on the Georgia Milestones Assessment (GMAS) by giving them practice with scientific observation, reading comprehension, and applying content knowledge in different formats.
